I can't believe how fast this month has gone by. I guess traveling throughout Italy for two weeks has something to do with that. We went to see our son, who is stationed over there. We arrived in Milan, which is a bustling city with a spectacular cathedral and impressive mall with a glass ceiling. We left the next day and drove out to Lago De Como (Lake Como). What a beautiful place! Now I can see why George Clooney lives there. We took an hour cruise around the lake and then had a great dinner at a local cafe. With mounting anticipation we left Lago de Como and drove east to our next destination, Aviano. This is where we were once again reunited with our son. I was sooooo excited to see him as he walked in the courtyard of our quaint, family run hotel. We had a great time with him. He showed us some great local places to eat and we toured the local towns. If you ever get a chance, you must get up to Piancavalla. It is a small village with a ski resort next door. The drive is a sensory overload of the Alps and all it's splendor. The mid-evil villages have small cobblestone roads with occasional bicyclists rolling through. If you go in the afternoon, you are likely to see villages that appear to be abandoned...they literally shut down for siesta from 2-5pm. We took the train out to Venice. Yes, everything is moved on the canals! We saw police and fire boats, boat ambulances, and of course tons of gondolas. Walking is something you do a lot of in Italy. We ate a lot of pasta and pizza (Imagine that!!!), and didn't gain a pound. Highlights of Venice...St. Marks Square and Doge's Palace, and the gondola ride.
Well, that is it for tonight...I will try and write some more about the rest of our time in Italy tomorrow.
